P.A.TH.S is a curriculum that we have implemented in our program which focuses on fostering children’s development of Well Being and Identity.
It focuses on:
Emotional literacy: Identifying emotions and feelings.
So here at Acacia we look at feelings such as: happy, sad, angry, frustrated, tired, hungry, annoyed just to name a few. We use props like pictures, songs, posters, puppets, stories and books to illustrate what these emotions look like. We label the emotions that children are expressing.
Social behavior; Showing and expressing feelings are ok but some behaviors are not ok.
Like it is okay to feel frustrated or angry but it is not okay to hit. Here at Acacia we set social rules that they children need to follow; e.g. no hitting our friends, no throwing toys, consequences on behavior only. Never ignore behavior.
We give our friends compliments. Demonstrate how behaviors can affect our friends. Adults are not to express how it affects our feelings; adults only focus on broken rules.
We give and guide children to solve their problems, this give children life skills to cope with the real world. Children are to recognize the problem that needs solving.
Calming down; knowing when they have escalated on a scale and time to go down to a lower level.
Knowing how to calm down before our emotions get confused. We at Acacia assist children to have strategies to be able to calm down (de-escalation).
We provide areas where children can go and calm down, quiet areas, hiding areas indoor or outdoor.
We ask individual children the best way, place and method; they want to calm down when they are at a low level.
